Cheers to health as Grenadian mixologists are set to serve cocktails infused with a signature Spice Syrup for health-conscious drinkers.

Scientific research from around the world supports Grenada’s anecdotal evidence about nutmeg’s health benefits, highlighting its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may aid digestion.

Even Grenada’s very own Pharmacognosist Dr. Guido Marcelle, has endorsed this new product developed as a collaboration between the Grenada Tourism Authority, the Grenada Cooperative Nutmeg Association (GCNA) and acclaimed U.S. mixologist Joji Watanabe.

Dr.  Marcelle highlighted the potential health benefits of a product containing nutmeg, suggesting it could aid in brain health, potentially managing conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s.

“Evidence is showing that a nutmeg under the tongue produces certain chemicals that actually migrate to the brain. And what it does there is prevent the breakdown of substances that could lead to a stroke. So in other words, it helps alleviate someone getting a stroke. So it is not as we used to think. It was just a joke and just anecdotal,” Dr. Marcelle explained.

Dr. Marcelle believes that further research is needed to fully explore the health potential of nutmeg. While he acknowledges that some beneficial results have been reported by individuals who have used it, he emphasizes that the overall body of research is still lacking. He feels that, despite this, it is a good starting point for exploration.

With that in mind, Dr. Marcelle also emphasized that the product’s nutmeg content could be a significant selling point, especially for its cognitive health benefits.

“Because of climatic conditions, our volcanic soil and our latitude. You know, the chemistry of a nutmeg is peculiar, and that gives it certain characteristics, that endows it with the medicinal properties that could be beneficial,” Dr. Marcelle said.

Other health benefits of Nutmeg contained in Syrup can also boost libido in men enhancing sex drive and performance as well as assist women as well.

“Nutmeg has a unique quality that can be stimulating for both men and women, similar to ginger. In fact, coming out of India, there are special drinks prepared with nutmeg and milk, which are considered refreshing and invigorating. This combination of nutmeg and milk can also serve as a source of stimulation,” he said.

With considerable buzz surrounding the Spice Syrup among local mixologists, the Grenada Tourism Authority is utilizing Grenadian mixologists as brand ambassadors to promote its inclusion in health-conscious cocktails across the island’s bars.

Randall Dolland, Chairman of the Grenada Tourism Authority, discussed a marketing strategy aimed at promoting Grenada globally by highlighting the country’s unique cultural elements, particularly its food, spices, and rum.

“Food is the international language spoken everywhere you go,” he said. “What you eat and drink allows us to share our destination worldwide. By using our local natural ingredients, which offer numerous health benefits alongside our high-quality rums, we can engage visitors in an authentic conversation about Grenada. These visitors are our best ambassadors; they share their experiences and spread the word through reviews, which others find more credible,” he continued.

Dolland stated that by crafting a signature Grenadian drink with local ingredients and high-quality rum, the goal is to create a recognizable symbol of Grenada that can be enjoyed around the world. He believes this approach authentically showcases the country’s spirit and hospitality, making it an effective way to attract tourists.

“When enjoying this cocktail, its richness and potency will spark curiosity about Grenada. This approach serves as an organic marketing tool—it’s not gimmicky but rather a natural reflection of our identity and the spirit of Grenada. Let’s not only celebrate our drinks, but also promote our beautiful country through them,” he said.

Dolland stated that this product was created as part of the GCNA to simplify the process of showcasing Grenadian culture.

“Now, when you visit a bar anywhere in the world, you can enjoy a specific Grenadian drink, which we refer to as the Grenadian classic. The name and the concept will continue to evolve, and through this drink, people will learn about Grenada as a destination,” Dolland said.

To establish a favorite cocktail in the Caribbean, Grenada’s Tourism Authority is inviting submissions for a signature cocktail name that incorporates their unique syrup. A statement issued by the Grenada Tourism Authority mentioned that this competition aims to foster a sense of ownership and pride in this new national product among Grenadians, encouraging them to promote it globally.

According to the release, not only will the winning recipe become a part of Grenada’s culinary history, but the winner will also receive an exciting prize: a trip for two that includes round-trip airfare on interCaribbean, a VIP rum and spice tour, and a mixology class.
