The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has paid tribute to former senator and government minister Mary-Clare Hurst, describing her as a pioneering figure in national public life.

Cabinet members observed a moment of silence during Wednesday’s meeting in recognition of her years of service to politics and the ruling Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party.

Hurst is noted for a series of historic achievements, including becoming the first woman to serve as General Secretary of the party. She also served as a government senator, Deputy and Leader of Government Business in the Senate, and Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism and Economic Development.

She later chaired the Antigua and Barbuda Port Authority, where officials say she was widely respected for her administrative leadership and professionalism.

The government announced that Hurst will be accorded an Official Funeral in recognition of her contribution to public service and national development in Antigua and Barbuda.
