De Nully Says Relief in Sight for ‘Sick Buildings’ as New Government Complex Planned

Antigua and Barbuda Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU) President Bernard De Nully says relief may soon be in sight for workers operating in unhealthy office environments, pointing to plans for a new government complex as a long-term solution.

Speaking at the joint AT&LU and Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party Labour Day rally, De Nully acknowledged ongoing concerns about workplace conditions, including what he described as “sick buildings” affecting employees across the public sector.

He said the union has been in continuous dialogue with the government regarding health and safety issues, including ventilation, sanitation and general workplace standards.

“The union has been in constant dialogue… on many health hazards,” De Nully said, noting that several recommendations have already been implemented.

While recognising the challenges, De Nully told workers that improvements are on the horizon, citing the planned construction of a new government complex.

“But what our government… has planned is a new government complex, and we will eliminate all of these factors of health and safety issues,” he said.

The project, he indicated, is expected to address longstanding concerns about working conditions in rented and aging facilities.

De Nully’s remarks formed part of a broader Labour Day message focused on worker welfare, as the union marked its 75th anniversary.

He maintained that the union will continue to press for safe and healthy workplaces, while working with the government to deliver long-term solutions for employees.
