Browne Promises Improved Working Conditions for Workers
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has pledged to improve working conditions across the country, telling workers they can expect safer and better environments in the new term of his administration.
Speaking at the joint Antigua Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU) and Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party Labour Day rally, Browne said addressing workplace conditions remains a priority.
“I accept that there are gaps in the workplace in terms of safety,” Browne said.
He said the government has already taken steps to address those issues, including increasing staffing within public works to improve maintenance and safety standards.
“We have just ramped up employment in public works… to make sure they increase the safety of the workplace… to provide you with a safe and pristine environment in which to work,” he said.
Browne assured workers that further improvements are on the way, linking the initiative to what he described as a broader period of development.
“This term of the renaissance… you’ll get a better working environment in which to work,” he said.
He added that better conditions form part of a wider commitment that includes wage increases, expanded opportunities and improved healthcare access.
“We promise you… better working conditions,” Browne said.
The prime minister’s remarks come as the government begins a new term following the April 30 general election, with a focus on strengthening worker protections and improving standards across both the public and private sectors.
